  • Medical Marijuana Doctors in Hilo, HI

Since medical marijuana is legal in the state of Hawaii, residents who are suffering from chronic pain and other debilitating diseases have the option of using cannabis to treat their symptoms. This includes those who live in Hilo, a town on the Big Island that’s home to rainforests and two active volcanoes.

Hawaii’s medical cannabis program was the first to be established in the country and spearheaded the significant strides America has made in legalizing marijuana. The first bill was passed in 2000 and removed all state-level criminal penalties on the use, possession and cultivation of marijuana for patients who had signed statements from their doctors.

    Qualifying Conditions

To purchase marijuana in Hawaii, you must have been diagnosed with at least one of the following qualifying conditions or symptoms:

Other medical conditions could be approved by the department of health with a physician’s recommendation for a patient who could potentially qualify. These are handled on a case-by-case basis.

    Documentation

If you have one of the qualifying conditions listed above or believe you could be approved for other debilitating symptoms you’re experiencing, you’ll need to bring the following documentation with you to your marijuana evaluation appointment:

    • Valid Hawaii ID or other proof of residency
    • Legitimate medical records from your primary care physician describing your diagnosis
    • Certificate from the Narcotics Enforcement Division of the Department of Public Safety filled out by your doctor

Once you take these records to your appointment, you’ll receive your official registration certificate, or medical marijuana identification card, from the NED. You’ll use that card to purchase your medicine. Your card is valid for one year, so you must get approved again for a new card after your current one expires.

    Getting an Appointment

No matter which practice you choose, a doctor will conduct a comprehensive medical exam to determine if you qualify for a medical marijuana card in Hawaii. Both offices have helpful staff members who will then help you with the registration process if you qualify.
