Marijuana Dispensaries in Hawaii

Hawaii legalized medical marijuana in the year 2000. Under the law, medical cannabis card holders can either grow their own marijuana or use a dispensary to obtain their medicine.

The Hawaii Department of Health regulates the sale of medical marijuana and they require registry programs for patients and dispensaries alike. These programs are designed to keep the public safe and ensure the proper use of medical cannabis. For this reason, all patients must have a state-issued medical marijuana card to purchase their medicine from local dispensaries.

What Illnesses Does Medical Marijuana Treat?

  • Chronic Regional Pain or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (CHRPS or RSD)

How Long Will It Take to Obtain a Medical Marijuana Card in Hawaii?

According to the coordinator of the Medical Marijuana Registry for the Department of Health, it takes approximately four to six weeks for new applications to be processed. Applications that are incomplete will be returned to the applicant for more detailed information and then placed in the back of the line for medical cards.

Doctors require patients to print out forms prior to their visit to verify the patient fully understands the process and options. Working carefully with your doctor will ensure there are no delays in seeing your application processed.

Can Caregivers Grow Medical Marijuana for Their Patients?

Under Hawaii’s current laws, caregivers may not grow marijuana for their patients. There are some exemptions to this, but most caregivers must stop growing all medical marijuana by December 31, 2018.

Can Patients Grow Their Own Cannabis?

As long as the patient is in a registered program, they can grow their own supply of medical cannabis. However, they are not allowed to have more than seven plants at a time. Of those seven plants, only four ounces of the marijuana can be usable at any given time. Also, the growing site must be pre-approved and registered by the state prior to the growing process.

How Much Medical Marijuana Can Be Purchased at a Dispensary?

Only four ounces may be purchased from a medical marijuana dispensary every 15 days. Patients may purchase up to eight ounces every 30 days.
