The Hawaii medical cannabis program does not require patients to have state residency to join. However, you need to live in-state to join. You must also visit a Hawaii-licensed doctor for your evaluation and have an in-state address where you can receive your card. New and temporary residents can take advantage of this rule, but tourists can’t.
However, tourists may soon have the option to buy and use marijuana medicine in Hawaii. As of September 2018, the state plans to create a registration process for a temporary patient card in 2019. If you have a medical marijuana card from your home state, you can get a license that lasts 60 days but otherwise acts like a regular patient ID. Remember, you can’t transport marijuana between Hawaii’s islands because the ocean counts as federal territory.
You can sign up for Hawaii’s medical marijuana card using their online system. To get one, you must have a qualifying condition and your doctor’s approval. Your doctor doesn’t have to sign up as a certifying physician, but they must have an ongoing relationship with you. Any physician or ARPN who can work with controlled substances can recommend cannabis medicine for you.
