The small town of Berthoud aims to preserve their heritage, but they also stay open-minded about cannabis medicine. They let medical dispensaries do business and give them the option of opening a retail store at the same location.
However, the town doesn’t allow standalone recreational dispensaries to open. While this policy imposes certain limitations on dispensaries, it also makes it convenient for patients and adults over 21 to get relief. You can find medical and retail establishments in nearby Larimer County, but not in Weld County.
Colorado medical marijuana dispensaries and retail stores serve different purposes. Medicinal cannabis dispensaries — or medical marijuana centers — sell products meant to relieve symptoms. Meanwhile, retail stores have items for recreation. Many of the products sold at recreational dispensaries can still provide relief. However, patients have a few more benefits at medical dispensaries.
Your choice of dispensary depends on your age, residency and status as a patient cardholder. Patients can only shop at a medical marijuana center if they have a medicinal cannabis card from the state. That means anyone without one can’t use their services, even if they have another state’s card.
Retail stores take 21+ IDs, so residents and visitors alike can buy from them. However, retail purchases have higher taxes, and patients under 21 can’t get medicine from recreational stores. You should only visit a recreational dispensary if you can’t get a medical marijuana card.
Remember not to possess more than one ounce of marijuana as an adult over 21 or two ounces as a registered patient. Owning a higher amount is illegal under Colorado law.
