According to Colorado state law, anyone over 21 can buy cannabis at a retail dispensary. So, adults can make marijuana purchases within the town’s limits. However, patients under 21 have no options in De Beque.
Local laws decide which cannabis businesses can open in the area, and De Beque voted against medical dispensaries that accept patients under 21 who have a medical card. Retail stores don’t take these patient IDs, either, forcing parents to get medicine from another area.
On the flip side, adult out-of-state patients can buy cannabis at a retail store without having a medical card. Even program cards from other states don’t allow someone into a Colorado medical dispensary. Meanwhile, a valid form of ID showing an age of 21 or over means you can make a purchase at a recreational store.
Inventory and pricing make the two biggest differences between medical and retail dispensaries. Recreational locations sell many of the same products that medical dispensaries have. But, they can’t sell high-THC items that certain patients need for severe symptoms. Retail cannabis stores must collect a 15 percent tax on their purchases, while medical locations only have to charge 2.9 percent.
