Chronic pain is a condition that interrupts every aspect of daily living, from self-care to employment, and recreation. Traditional pharmaceutical approaches to pain management are not always effective for patients. Long term use of prescription pain relief medications can actually intensify the level of pain that patients experience on a daily basis.
New studies have demonstrated that opioids can increase nerve sensitivity when used for an extended period of time for pain management. After many years of using pain medications, patients can develop a tolerance for opioids and NSAIDs, and they become ineffective. The solution in conventional medical practice is to increase the dose of pain medication or try different combinations of prescriptions therapeutically. This approach can put patients at increased risk of many harmful side-effects associated with opioids and other pain management drugs.
