Dr. Maquera is a Board Certified Neurologist who practices adult general neurology and selected conditions of pediatric and child neurology. He attended Medical School at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, receiving his MD degree in 1982. He obtained his General Neurology Residency and subspecialty training in EEG, EMG, Sleep Disorders at the National Naval Medical Center "Bethesda" and Children's Hospital Washington, DC.

He obtained Undersea Medicine Training while on active duty in the US Navy, with special expertise in hyperbaric, diving and submarines. He has treated over 350 cases of Diving and Decompression Sickness. He was selected to teach Diving Medicine at the US Navy Dive School at Panama City, Florida, rewriting the entire curriculum for Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine. He served as the Medical Officer for the USS Alabama SSBN 731 (Gold) and USS Ohio SSBN 726 (Blue) submarines, making 3 strategic deterrent patrols. While stationed in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines, served as the Diving Medical Officer for Naval Special Warfare Unit ONE, Explosive Ordnance Detachment Mobile Unit FIVE, 3rd Marine Reconnaissance Battalion, participating in various exercises throughout the Pacific and Indian Ocean from Korea to the Seychelles, Singapore and Guam. As the Medical Officer for Submarine Group SEVEN, participated in various exercises with most of the attack submarines assigned to SubGroup SEVEN. In Subic Bay, served by treating over 350 cases of Diving and Decompression Sickness including several Treatment Table 7s. As the Diving Medical Officer for CTF 73 participated in various exercises including salvage of aircraft and ships with most of the Salvage ships and units assigned to the US Navy Seventh Fleet from Korea to Singapore and Guam. After leaving the US Navy in 1998, Dr. Maquera has been practicing neurology for over 20 years in Jacksonville and Orange Park, Florida. Dr. Maquera is certified by the State of Florida to evaluate and prescribe medical marijuana for approved conditions identified by the State of Florida (MS, seizures, Parkinson's disease, chronic pain, and ALS). His current interests and expertise include multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions of the nervous system such as CIDP, stiff-man syndrome, myasthenia gravis and autoimmune muscle disorders. He provides treatment for various seizure disorders including epilepsy, bringing over 20 years of experience with the Vagal Nerve Stimulator (VNS). He enjoys treating Parkinson's disease, essential & familial tremors including the use and monitoring of the Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS) for the treatment of these conditions. He has years of experience treating stroke, and actually established the first protocols for t-PA ("Clot Buster") in 1995 for Orange Park Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, St. Vincent's Medical Center, and Baptist Hospital.
