With Macedonia’s legalization of medical cannabis in 2016, many patients wondered if and how they would qualify for medical marijuana. Whether you’re a patient or caregiver to a loved one, we’ve compiled the information you need to understand the process of qualifying for medical weed in Macedonia.

Qualifying Conditions for Medical Marijuana in Macedonia

Macedonia does not limit medical marijuana to select conditions. It does, however, recommend some, including:

The Ministry of Health, which leads the country’s medical cannabis program, grants adults and minors the ability to use medical weed. Those under the age of 18, however, do need permission from their parent or guardian before receiving a prescription.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Patient in Macedonia

While Macedonia does not require patients to register with the government or apply for a medical marijuana card, it does require them to receive their recommendation and prescription from a licensed physician in the country — specifically a specialist for your condition.

Per Macedonia’s medical marijuana laws, your specialist will need to occupy one of the following fields:

  • Radiotherapy
  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Infectious diseases

During your appointment, you’ll discuss the following:

  • Medical history
  • Past treatments
  • Benefits and side effects of medical cannabis
  • Dosage amounts and administration methods

If you and your physician agree medical marijuana could benefit you, they’ll issue their recommendation and a prescription.

An exception to this process is if you’re interested in using cannabis oil with a cannabinoid concentration of 0.2 percent or less. Macedonia allows pharmacies to offer this type of medical weed over-the-counter, which means you can purchase it without a prescription.

How to Access Medical Marijuana in Macedonia

To access medical marijuana, whether it’s with a prescription or over-the-counter, visit your local pharmacy. It’s recommended to contact your drugstore in advance and ask if they carry cannabis oil, as some may not.

When you arrive at your pharmacy, supply your prescription or pick up your over-the-counter cannabis oil. The pharmacist will fill your order and go over any specific dosing instructions. They’ll also ask if you have any questions about using medical weed.

Prescriptions for medical cannabis cover a 30-day supply. To renew your order, you don’t have to schedule an appointment with your specialist, such as a neurologist. Instead, you can visit your general practitioner. They’ll provide you with a new, valid prescription. It is recommended to still visit your specialist throughout the year, as you’ll want to keep them up-to-date on how your medical marijuana prescription is working for you.

How Medical Marijuana Laws in Macedonia Protect Patients

Like many other countries, the Macedonian government and Ministry of Health are committed to protecting patients. They do this by incorporating pharmacies into the program and requiring patients to meet with a physician on a regular basis.

These standards ensure patients are receiving the best medical care, as well as being overseen by a qualified physician. By taking this approach, Macedonia has brought medical weed into its healthcare system and is treating it as a medication that requires review to ensure its quality and safety.
