For several years, legislators in the Czech Republic have worked on building the country’s medical marijuana program. With the launch of the prescription-based program, patients throughout the region can now access and use medical cannabis to alleviate their conditions. Whether you or a loved one are considering medical weed, it’s essential to understand the program’s features and role within the Czech Republic.

Benefits of a Medical Marijuana Card in the Czech Republic

Many countries with medical marijuana programs, like Colombia, Italy and the community of Catalonia in Spain, do not mandate medical marijuana cards. The Czech Republic has also taken this approach with its medical cannabis program.

When prescribed medical marijuana, you do not need to file an application. Instead, your information, such as your birthdate, name, health insurance identification number and prescription information, is sent automatically to the State Institute for Drug Control (SUKL) database for electronic prescriptions.

How to Apply for a Medical Marijuana Card in the Czech Republic

Since the Czech Republic’s medical marijuana program doesn’t include medical cannabis cards, you don’t have to apply for one. Instead, your focus should be on finding and meeting with a qualified medical marijuana doctor who specializes in your condition.

Per the Czech Republic’s medical cannabis laws, patients must receive a medical marijuana prescription from a specialist — general practitioners cannot issue them. If your loved one has Tourette’s syndrome, for example, their psychiatrist would need to prescribe medical marijuana.

Not all physicians will recommend medical weed. If your doctor does not, you’ll need to request a referral or find a specialist who does. Even if your physician will prescribe medical marijuana, ensure they’re knowledgeable about its role as a medicine, including its potential side effects and benefits for your condition.

How to Recertify a Medical Marijuana Card in the Czech Republic

Recertifying your medical marijuana card is a non-issue, due to the Czech Republic’s medical cannabis laws. You or your loved one, however, will need to renew your medical marijuana prescription by meeting with your designated physician.

Czechia’s prescriptions for medical cannabis do not include refills. Their dosage amounts are also limited, as they can’t exceed the 180-gram monthly limit the government has set. As a result, you’ll want to meet with your doctor each month to renew your prescription and discuss any potential changes to it, such as your dosage.

Certification of Medical Marijuana Doctors in the Czech Republic

While the Czech Republic doesn’t require physicians to undergo a training and certification process to prescribe medical cannabis, it does restrict general practitioners from recommending this medicine. This decision ensures you’re meeting with a doctor who is experienced with your condition, as well as medical marijuana.

Since only specialists, such as neurologists, rheumatologists and oncologists, may prescribe medical cannabis, it’s essential they study and research its role within their field. Due to the age of the medical marijuana program in the Czech Republic, it’s an ongoing effort among doctors to become educated about the medicine. Whether medical schools in the Czech Republic will introduce classes that discuss medical cannabis remains to be seen.
