What Is Hypertension?

Hypertension, more commonly known by its street name of high blood pressure, is a medical condition whereby the heart is working harder to push blood through the body, either on the return of blood to the heart or the letting go of blood from the heart. Hypertension is caught when a person goes into the doctor's office for a routine check up or an illness and the blood pressure cuff reveals a number the doctor and attending nurses just aren't comfortable with. Otherwise it can present itself as shortness of breath going up a flight of stairs, a feeling that the heart is pounding right out of the chest even after minimal exertion, and even profuse sweating. The doctor will run tests for verification, and once verified will sit down with the patient to discuss a course of action and treatment Hypertension has innumerable causes; primarily age and obesity are the two most frequent causes of this disorder. However, some people can be very young and very thin and still have hypertension. In these cases it's due to a congenital defect of the heart, present from birth, that causes them to have hypertension. Other causes of hypertension can include high sodium levels in the blood, overuse and abuse of caffeinated products and energy drinks, and, everyone's personal favorite, stress. Age factors cannot be controlled, but obesity can. Your doctor is no longer allowed to tell you your fat and you need to lose weight to bring your blood pressure down because patients have sued their doctors for saying so. Congenital hypertension is treated with medication, and sometimes if severe enough, open heart surgery. Low sodium diets are prescribed with meds to help hypertensives with high sodium level hypertension, and doctors can only tell you that it will benefit your health not to drink energy drinks and cut back on caffeinated products. As for stress, it is all around us and we all suffer from it every day, because stress is adequately defined as "constantly doing that which you have to do but definitely don't want to do". Doctors will only tell you to exercise, find a way to relax, do yoga, etc..
So let's look at a few items more closely here. You have to give up caffeine? Try Sativa, the energy inducing strain of medical marijuana that will keep you moving as if you had caffeine but without the hypertension your caffeinated products caused you. Studies are also beginning to show that obesity can be helped with medical marijuana. Many eating disorders are linked to a lack of the natural cannabinoids that are already in the brain and replacing them with the ones gained from the use of medical marijuana helps patients gain a sense of balance and control over what they eat. As for stress, well, that's the obvious one here. Pot smoking has been done for years as a means to relax, reach nirvana, and be at peace. Reducing the stress in anyone's life through a semi-regular use of medical marijuana would lead to a lot of easier going, more peaceful population of people that have a decent and regulated coping mechanism approved by their state's legislation for stress release.

The really scary part is, that hypertension medications cause the heart's pressure to drop. If you were to lose weight through exercise but continue to take those pills and not consult with a doctor after the weight loss, you could dangerously drop your heart rate too low. Hypotension is the disorder at the opposite end of this spectrum and it's just as dangerous as hypertension. Regular care and monitoring by a doctor is needed; with the use of medical marijuana, that is all but unnecessary. Intermittent visits to the doctor for lesser cases of hypertension brought on by controllable causes is really all that is needed.
Short of congenital hypertension and hypertension brought on by high salt intake or the body's production of large amounts of sodium, medical marijuana once again proves to be the saving grace natural drug of choice. Should the hypertensive patient need open heart surgery for hypertension, medical marijuana can be there for the aftermath of pain and swelling and take care of those symptoms too.
