Who Uses Medical Marijuana? A Cancer Patient’s Story

“When I was in college in the 70’s I would have never believed that pot would still be illegal. Little did I realize how very much I would come to appreciate it,” says Katherine M., a 57-year-old author, teacher, coach and motivator from San Diego, California.
In 2007, Katherine was diagnosed with rectal cancer and went through severe chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments. She was prescribed what she calls “heavy duty drugs” to deal with these harsh cancer treatments, but did not like the side effects associated with them. She needed a natural alternative.
Katherine says she has always known about the restorative properties of pot, but didn’t have the strength to go through the legal process of getting medical cannabis and a medical marijuana card. Plus at that time there were no marijuana doctors in San Diego. So her family went about getting medical marijuana for her illegally, which turned out to be a tremendously helpful medicine.
In addition to being effective for nausea and pain associated with chemo and radiation therapy, Katherine found an additional emotional benefit by using medical marijuana.
“Going through cancer was a scary and lonely journey. I loved what pot did for my mind and thoughts. I could just unplug and daydream the time away rather than lay there scared and worried about what was happening to my body,” she explains. “There is nothing like the mental and emotional relief of pot.”
Now, Katherine is a legal medical marijuana patient and continues to use medical cannabis to alleviate occasional pain, anxiety and sleep problems. Getting a marijuana recommendation was a largely positive experience. “I had an awesome first experience with the system from seeing the doctor to selecting my first legal marijuana. Everyone was kind and respectful and I was 100% comfortable,” she says. “It feels wonderful to be legit.”
