A recent study focused on the consumption trends of all medically and recreationally legal U.S. states, ranking the states in order of their rate of legal cannabis consumption — take a closer look at the “Top 5 Highest States Consuming Cannabis” in the U.S.
#5. WASHINGTON — 19.5%
With 19.5% of the general state population toking up, Washington is the fifth highest cannabis consuming state. Washington, along with Colorado, was one of the first U.S. states to end prohibition, by legalizing adult-use cannabis and implementing a regulated recreational framework. Additionally, Washington was also one of the first states to legalize medical marijuana use by patients in possession of a doctor’s recommendation, in 1998 — just one year after, California initially sparked the medical marijuana movement. While Washington and Colorado effectively legalized adult-use of cannabis, at the same time, the models implemented vary greatly, resulting in Washington’s placement at #5 of the Top 5 Highest States Consuming Cannabis in the U.S.
#4. ALASKA — 19.5%
Tied with Washington, 19.5% of the general state population are toking up, in Alaska. Alaska is one of four U.S. states to legalize the adult-use of cannabis, passing legislature measures in 2014, that effectively implemented a regulated recreational framework. Additionally, Alaska is also one of the states with the most-relaxed cannabis laws under prohibition, altogether decriminalizing cannabis, in the 70’s.
#3. VERMONT — 19.8%
Coming in third with 19.8% of the general state population toking up, is Vermont. According to statistical data, the state-registered medical marijuana patients of Vermont, collectively consumed 25 metric tons, during the year of 2014 — for a visual understanding how how much 25 metric tons is, consider that a small car and fully grown bear, weigh approximately 1 metric ton. An impressive rate of consumption for a state that has yet to pass an adult-use recreational model!
#2. OREGON — 19.9%
Slipping into second place with 19.9% of the general state population toking up, is Oregon. The state with the second highest rate of cannabis consumption, Oregon is one of those states that strongly embrace the cannabis culture, lifestyle and way of life, and is one of the few states that allow adults to liberally cultivate cannabis in reasonable quantities. Until recently, the Oregon cannabis system remained largely unregulated, which largely accounts, for the culture of heavy consumers.
#1. COLORADO — 21.5%
Coming in on top with 21.5% of the general state population toking up, is none other than, Colorado. With it’s reputation as the Weed Meca of the U.S., Colorado’s 21.5% consumption rate, translated into $135,000,000 being collected, between taxes and registration fees, in 2015. The state has one of the most permissive cannabis systems, allowing adults to grow up to six plants, at home.
