How do I get medical marijuana in Oregon? Is marijuana, cannabis, pot or weed legal in Oregon? What’s the difference between a marijuana recommendation and a marijuana prescription? How do I find a medical marijuana doctor?

With different rules for each medical marijuana state, it can be difficult to find the answers to these questions. So we’ve compiled this Oregon Medical Marijuana Law Fact Sheet to make it a little easier to obtain the medicine you need.

Defenses Provided:

Oregon’s medical marijuana law provides exemption from prosecution for patients in lawful possession of a registry card (aka medical marijuana cards); Patients are also given an affirmative defense if they are not registered but are in compliance with the law.

Medical Marijuana Uses:

Under Oregon medical marijuana law, medical cannabis may be used for the following conditions: Cancer, Glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, or treatment for these conditions; A medical condition or treatment for a medical condition that produces, for a specific patient, one or more of the following: Cachexia; Severe pain; Severe nausea; Seizures, including but not limited to seizures caused by epilepsy; Persistent muscle spasms, including but not limited to spasms caused by multiple sclerosis; or agitation due to Alzheimer’s disease.

Documentation Needed:

In order to qualify for medical marijuana in Oregon, patients must obtain a valid, written documentation from their attending physician stating that he or she has been diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition and that the medical use of marijuana may mitigate the symptoms or effects of the his or her debilitating condition.

Marijuana Card Program:

Medical marijuana patients in Oregon must register with the state Department of Human Services to receive a medical marijuana card (aka cannabis card).

Cannabis Possession and Growing Limits:

Medical cannabis patients in Oregon may possess up to 24 ounces of usable marijuana, six mature marijuana plants, and 18 seedlings jointly with his or her caregiver. Oregon does not allow patients to purchase marijuana at dispensaries at this time.

Caregiver Provisions:

Medical Marijuana patients in Oregon may designate one caregiver to possess, transport and grow cannabis on the patient’s behalf. There may only be one caregiver per patient, but caregivers can serve multiple patients simultaneously.
