Medical Marijuana: A Deaf Person’s Perspective
Posted by Marijuana Doctors on 04/07/2011 in Medical Marijuana Patient Stories
Medical marijuana patients come from all walks of life, all ages, backgrounds, and genders. And it works just as well for the hearing as it does for the Deaf. We recently had a hard of hearing woman from Florida reach out and share her thoughts on medical cannabis, and we wanted to share it with you:
“My name is Madeline. I am hard of hearing and I support medical marijuana use. When I was a baby I lost all of my hearing in one ear, and most of my hearing in the other, due to spinal meningitis. I use cannabis as a medicine for my migraines and for every day stress and anxiety.
Something that most hearing people don’t understand about Deaf and hard of hearing people is the frustration we encounter every day. We live in a world where we can’t communicate with 95% of the people we encounter. We are constantly ignored or stared at blankly. We can’t even see a doctor without first scheduling an interpreter which can take weeks. It’s especially hard as you’re growing up, and don’t have anyone you can talk to or even relate to. For that reason a lot of Deaf people, myself included, have anger issues. It’s just a part of life. But cannabis actually helps relieve that stress of every day, the stress that undoubtedly comes with being Deaf of hard of hearing. I have many friends who use cannabis to relieve that stress. It works for me too.
Cannabis also helps my migraines better than any other medicine I’ve taken. And believe me I tried them all! I used to take Vicodin, Oxy and other pain meds. But they are addictive and make me feel even more nauseous than the migraines. I’m still stuck in bed all day long, unable to function or work. So what’s the point in taking them?? With weed I take a couple puffs and the pain is gone.
I think everyone should be able to use medical marijuana. Unfortunately it’s not yet legal where I live but hopefully it will be soon!”
