As the fate of a measure that will bring medical marijuana to the state of Illinois lies in the hands of the state’s Governor, Democratic Governor Pat Quinn would only go as far as stating that he remains “open minded” on the measure. Those in the state of Illinois have become compassionately educated on the benefits of medical marijuana, and would expect the Governor to take the same approach and comprehensively take a look into this matter.

According to a report by the Associated Press, Governor Pat Quinn told the City Club of Chicago that he is currently in the middle of reviewing the language of the medical marijuana measure and would not say whether or not he plans on signing the measure into a law. Last Friday, the Illinois State Senate voted in favor of this measure in a 35-21 fashion and received a vote of approval from the House of Representatives.

The medical marijuana measure has gained the support of many state legislators and has created something similar to a domino effect on lawmakers who were on the fence about this topic. The bill has also gained the support of Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon, who personally heard the stories of patients who would benefit from this drug. According to a majority of Illinois voters, a coalition of nearly 250 physicians also approve of the measure.

If Governor Pat Quinn decides to enact this measure into a law, it would establish a four-year pilot program during which individuals with serious diseases would be able to obtain an Illinois medical marijuana card and would allow them to purchase a set amount of medicine. Current standards based upon the language of this measure are up to two and a half ounces of medicine. Medicine may be obtained from one of the states sixty to-be licensed medical marijuana dispensaries.
