Don’t Demonize Weed Says Dr. Sanjay Gupta

Dr. Gupta came out of the cannabis closet a while back now and since then has made three documentaries on the benefits of cannabis. He’s currently working on the fourth installment of his series ‘Weed’.
In a recent interview on “Monday’s with Marlo”, he spoke about cannabis and why it should be decriminalized.
Giving Cannabis a Fair Chance
One of the main points that Dr. Gupta raised was that no other medicine has been discriminated against as cannabis. Other substances go through the rigorous testing to ensure quality and medical validity; however, cannabis has been stonewalled for decades now.
In fact, the vast majority of government studies were issued to find the ‘negative effects’ of cannabis. What the researchers usually found in these studies were quite the opposite.
Within the United States, the infrastructure permits us to research the living hell out of cannabis, however due to the Scheduling of the substance; getting permission is next to impossible. The DEA says that the FDA must approve while the FDA says that the DEA must give them permission. So goes the wonderful catch-22 that the US government implements.
In turn, cannabis research is stifled by political horseplay and the people stuck with the bill are those dying from cancer and a wide range of diseases and conditions.
The demonization of cannabis
Why is the mainstream so resistant to cannabis research? It all stems from the period known as ‘Reefer Madness’ that obscured the good name of cannabis by spinning tall tales of murder and decadence. None of the information presented to Congress in 1937 would stand the scrutiny of today’s medical standards.
Yet despite all this, cannabis was made out to be a devil weed that will turn your innocent children into sex thirsty whores with an appetite for violence.
The demonization continued well into the 90s. It was only really by the late 90s that people started demanding cannabis as a medicine after reviewing decades of research outlining the benefits of cannabis.
Dr. Gupta simply wants to give cannabis the same treatment as any other medicine, to go through the trials that are already established and to become a staple treatment for those who need it.
