Bobby Tuna’s “Silver Tour:” Bringing Cannabis to Senior Citizens

Bobby Tuna will go down in history for his role in the Black Tuna Gang. And he will certainly be remembered for being the longest serving non-violent marijuana prisoner in American history. But Robert Platshorn (his real name) is making history in yet another way. He’s on a mission to legalize marijuana by educating senior citizens about the medical benefits of cannabis with the Silver Tour.

Platshorn launched the Silver Tour this year to educate and inform seniors on the benefits and exciting discoveries in the medical cannabis field, and to encourage activism for legalization and create demand for safe access.

The Silver Tour aims to bring the message of medical marijuana to senior community clubhouses, senior centers, auditoriums, local libraries, universities and public parks across America. It’s a 2-hour event where real doctors and nurses educate seniors on the real medical benefits of cannabis, and gives seniors a chance to get involved with the movement.

When Platshorn was released from prison in 2008, he reunited with his wife and moved into her Palm Beach senior community. He also began living a life of pro-pot activism, working with NORML, speaking at cannabis rallies and events, and working to get medical marijuana on the Florida ballot in 2011.

It wasn’t long before he heard stories of people with MS, cancer and other ailments who truly needed medical marijuana to alleviate their pain—especially from older people in his senior community. And one day, while speaking at a marijuana rally, while receiving nothing but cheers and applause from familiar faces, he realized he wasn’t reaching the people who could make a difference. “I was preaching to the choir,” he explained. He needed a new platform.

It suddenly dawned on him that he needed to bring this message to seniors. Not only because seniors need the medicine more than most other demographics, but they also “have the time and inclination to talk to their representatives and demand safe access,” said Platshorn.

So far, Platshorn has done two events that he says have received a “tremendous response.” And he recently filed for non-profit status. The Sliver Tour is sponsored by High Times and NORML, but they are looking for more support to take the Silver Tour to all 50 states.
