Barack Obama’s Stance on Marijuana: Will He Protect and Respect State Rights?

On Friday December 14th, 2012 Barbara Walters interviewed Barack Obama in her latest segment airing on ABC. She pointedly asked the President “Do you think that Marijuana should be legalized?” Obama responded, “ I wouldn’t go that far, but what I think is that at this point, Washington and Colorado, you’ve seen the voters speak on this issue and as it is, you know, the Federal Government has a lot to do when it comes to criminal prosecutions. It does not make sense from a prioritization point of view for us to focus on recreational drug users in a state that has already said that under state law that’s legal.

Don’t anger half the country

On Friday Spokesman Jay Carney added that the president believes that there are “bigger fish to fry” in prioritizing law enforcement goals. From this perspective, in addition to our economic problems, most Americans understand that the Federal government does not have the resources to effectively overturn the decisions for recreational marijuana as seen by the election outcomes in Washington and Colorado. Tax paying Americans fund our federal government and according to a December 5th Quinnipiac University Poll, American voters are in favor of legalizing marijuana 51% – 44%. By the Federal government uncommitted to a particular stance, they are in effect, giving themselves time to see how the new recreational marijuana laws evolve without necessarily angering half of the country.

Obama Smoked Marijuana?

It is interesting to note that Obama has made similar comments on medical marijuana in the past, yet the US Attorney General Eric Holder and the DEA have continued to raid medical marijuana businesses throughout the country. It is also interesting that in Obama’s 1995 memoir, “Dreams From My Father”, Obama wrote that he regularly smoked marijuana with his high school friends in a “club of disaffection.” Former President Bill Clinton has also publicly expressed that he experimented with marijuana, but he didn’t like it, he didn’t inhale and he never tried it again.

More pressing problems facing our country

At this point in time, many Americans believe that we have much more pressing problems facing our country such as terrorism, Mexican cartels, financial insolvency, economic slowdown, our inadequate mental health care..etc, the list is endless. Why our Federal government will take our limited tax dollars and use it for ineffective criminal prosecutions against non-violent offenders has fed up many people.

Food for thought:

We have the largest prison population in the world even though we have a population 1/8 the size of China and India. Such publicly traded private prison corporations like CCA and GEO, earn over 2 billion dollars a year and actively spend millions of dollars lobbying our political leaders.
