Safer Medicating: Hemp/Bee’s Wax Wick

Opponents of medical marijuana will argue that cannabis is not a medicine because “you don’t smoke medicine.” In the defense of marijuana, cannabis actually has expectorant qualities that help smokers cough up any toxic material. And it’s scientifically proven that cannabis does not cause lung cancer, even for heavy smokers. A 2006 study conducted by the University of California at Los Angeles and funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer. Plus, vaporizers are a good way to avoid inhaling carcinogens.

But for the dangers of inhaling fumes from butane lighters and chemicals from matches, we can’t argue there. But we can recommend a natural safer alternative: a hemp and bee’s wax wick.

A hemp bee’s wax wick is essentially a line of hemp dipped in beeswax that a smoker uses to light his or her pipe, bong or joint. By lighting the wick with a lighter or match, and then using it to light your buds, you can avoid directly inhaling the butane gas or chemicals from a match. Plus it retains the yummy taste of your meds. You can purchase it from Beeline or easily make your own. Here’s how:

  1.  Melt organic beeswax in a pot (that you don’t mind using solely for this purpose) over a very low flame.
  2. Once wax is completely melted, submerge preferred length of hemp line in wax and let soak for up to 5 minutes.
  3. Remove help line with a fork and set on a paper towel or a sheet of foil to dry.
  4. Once dry, untangle the string and remove any excess wax by running your finger and thumb down the string.
  5. You can wrap it around a lighter, or a piece of cardboard for storing.

Happy medicating!
