Colorado Lowers Cost for Medical Marijuana Cards

Becoming a medical marijuana patient in Colorado just got more affordable.

The Colorado State Board of Health voted unanimously on Wednesday to reduce the fee for a medical marijuana license from $90 a year to $35 a year. This marks the second time the fee has been slashed. When the medical marijuana program started in 2000, the annual fee was a whopping $140.

Not only did the Board vote to lower the application fee, but they also voted to change their fee waiver requirements, so that more patients will qualify. The Board of Health has said that these new, more affordable fees will adequately cover the expenses associated with running the medical marijuana card program in Colorado.

So how do the new fees in Colorado compare to other states? Let’s take a look at all of the medical marijuana card program fees of all of the current medical marijuana states:

State By State Medical Marijuana Card Fees

Alaska Medical Marijuana Card Fee: Nonrefundable fee of $25.00 ($20.00 for a renewal)

Arizona Medical Marijuana Card Fee: $150, can be reduced to $75 with proof of enrollment in SNAP, or food stamps.

California Medical Marijuana Card Fee: $66.00 state fee plus any additional county fees

Washington, DC Medical Marijuana Card Fee: TBD

Delaware Medical Marijuana Card Fee: TBD

Hawaii Medical Marijuana Card Fee: Patients do not need a medical marijuana card, but instead must register with the Narcotics Enforcement Division of the Department of Public Safety. Cost is $25 for you as patient plus $25 for your caregiver if you have one.

Maine Medical Marijuana Card Fee:  $100 application fee. For a patient on MaineCare this fee is $75.

Montana Medical Marijuana Card Fee: A fee of $25.00 for a new application. A renewal is $10. 

Nevada Medical Marijuana Card Fee: $50 application fee and a $150 registration fee.

New Jersey Medical Marijuana Card Fee: Application fee TBD

New Mexico Medical Marijuana Card Fee: personal production license fee of $30, waived for those who earn less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines

Oregon Medical Marijuana Card Fee: $100 application fee

Rhode Island Medical Marijuana Card Fee: There is a patient application fee of $75, but this fee can be reduced to $10 with proof of Medicaid, SSI, or SSDI.

Vermont Medical Marijuana Card Fee: $50 application fee

Washington Medical Marijuana Card Fee: There is no medical marijuana card program in Washington. Patients simply need a written recommendation from their physicians.
