Marijuana edibles, or “medibles” as they are also known, are an appetizing and yummy way to medicate, but because of how delicious they are, many people are inclined to eat more than they should. As many newcomers opt for edibles as their method of medication, most are unsure about how much, or how little, to eat. Especially given the lack of standardization of the edibles industry — however as legalization continues to trend and become the norm, the edibles industry will shed its childish image for a more regulated and marketed representation, that will include safety precautions and quality control, making dosing easier and more intuitive, than ever before.

Until that time, here are “5 Things You Need To Know About Medicating With Edibles.”

Read the Package Dosing Guidelines CAREFULLY

According to Colorado’s edibles dosing guidelines, 10 milligrams is the standard dose, although 5 milligram products are advisable for newcomers and those with a sensitive or low tolerance to cannabis. Also pay careful attention to the specific amount per portion — for example, in a packet of sour gummy’s or watermelon tarts, each piece contains 10 milligrams, as opposed to all the pieces together equaling 10 milligrams. Which is why it can be easy to accidentally ingest more than you should, especially when you talking about a chocolate bar, whereby the individual blocks constitute a dosage, not the entire slab.

Take Your Tolerance Into Consideration

Newcomers and those who haven’t used cannabis is some time, are advised to start off with a smaller dose than stipulated, this will help you gauge your tolerance. If after a period of time you feel that you need more, gradually increase the dose, again being initially cautious to not over do it — you can always eat more, but if you have eaten too much, you will have to wait it out. But if you find that you ingested too much for your current tolerance, do not panic, take a couple deep breaths and crawl up in a comfy spot, close your eyes, and allow your body to drift off to a deep sleep — and when you awake, you will feel as refreshed as  newborn baby.

Go Slow, You Can Eat More — Not Less

Again, its important to stress the fact that you can always eat more— NOT LESS! Its understandable to see why you would be inclined to overindulge in edibles, given the yummy nature of these tasty treats. But its important not to treat them as a “treat” and respect the medicine. A good way of monitoring yourself if you lack in the will power department, is to keep a non-medicated candy bar on hand, to satisfy the devilish craving of your sweet tooth. Its hard to say exactly when an edible will be effective in a each person, as it varies from individual to individual based on body fat and metabolism — it could take 30 minutes or it could take an hour and a half. Take this into consideration before ingesting your second dose.

Be Mindful of Your Stomach’s Contents

Before ingesting your first dose, be mindful of what you have eaten and had to drink in the hours leading up to your time of dosage. An empty stomach is more likely to encourage a quicker response time — newcomers may think about starting off with a reduced dose.

Find A Peaceful Relaxing Spot

The effects are edibles are most appreciated and enjoyed in a comfortable and relaxing surrounding. Newcomers may want to have a friend or companion monitor their first time — that way they can help to monitor your dosage, and make sure you don’t accidentally overdo it, and be close at hand to help should you experience any discomfort.
