Medical Marijuana and Malignant Melanoma

What Is Malignant Melanoma?

Malignant melanoma is a neoplasm of melanocytes or a neoplasm of the cells that develop from melanocytes. Although this condition was once considered an uncommon occurrence, the annual incidence of this condition occurring and being diagnosed, has increased drastically over the past few decades. Usually, the definitive treatment for early-state melanoma is surgery, while medical marijuana is generally reserved for adjuvant treatment of advanced stages of melanoma. Melanocytes produce the dark pigment, melanin, which is responsible for the color change of the skin with this condition. These cells predominantly occur in the skin, but are found in other parts of the body as well.

Melanoma is less common than other types of skin cancers, however it is far more dangerous if it is not found and properly diagnosed in its early stages. This condition causes a 75% majority of deaths that are related to skin cancer. Worldwide, physicians diagnose about 160,000 new cases of melanoma. Those who suffer from this condition tend to live in more geographically sunny and tropical areas. This geographic pattern directly reflects the primary cause, ultraviolet light exposure crossed with the amount of skin pigmentation in the population.

Medical marijuana or medical cannabis can be a great reliever for patients who suffer from this condition. The use of cannabis may attenuate allergic responses within the body, and is capable of blocking key CB2 receptions in the skin that leads to a decrease in your body's inflammatory response of the epidermis. The scratching, irritation and uncomfortable feeling that may come along with this condition can be greatly reduced and can leave patients with a comfortable and care-free lifestyle that they longed for before this treatment option came about.
