Medical Marijuana and Quadriplegia

What Is Quadriplegia?

Quadriplegia, also known as tetraplegia, is a form of bodily paralysis that is caused by an illness or a sustained injury to a part of the body that results in partial or total loss of the use of the limbs and torso. The loss that occurs is usually sensory and motor, which means that both sensation and control are lost. The main cause for quadriplegia is by any occurred trauma to the brain or the spinal cord. Spinal cord injuries are secondary to an injury to the cervical spine. The injury that is sustained, which is recognized as a lesion, causes victims to lose partial or total function of all four limbs (meaning the arms and the legs).

Medical Marijuana and Quadriplegia

Typical causes of quadriplegia are trauma associated with traffic collisions, diving into shallow water, a terrible fall or even a sports injury. Certain diseases such as transverse myelitis or polio, congenital disorders such as muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis are also causes of this condition. It is possible to suffer a broken neck without becoming a quadriplegic, because when the vertebrae are fractured or dislocated, the spinal cord is not damaged. Conversely, it is very possible to injure the spinal cord without breaking the spine.

Patients, who suffer from quadriplegia or tetraplegia, will find an absolutely great and essential form of comfort and alleviation in that of medical marijuana. Those who use medical marijuana with this condition will receive a better overall sense of well-being, lessening of any muscular spasticity associated with this condition and the alleviating of any neuropathic pain.
