Medical Marijuana and Felty's Syndrome

What Is Felty's Syndrome?

Felty's syndrome is a rare disorder that involves rheumatoid arthritis, a swollen spleen, decreased white blood cell count and repeated infections. The symptoms that are directly associated with Felty's syndrome are similar to those of rheumatoid arthritis. Patients who suffer from painfully stiff and swollen joints (most commonly in the joints of the hands, feet and arms), are mainly affected by this condition. Felty's syndrome may develop during a period when the symptoms and physical findings associated with rheumatoid arthritis have subsided or are not currently present. There are cases where Felty's syndrome can go without being diagnosed, and in more rare instances, the development of this condition may precede the overall development of the symptoms and physical findings associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Those who suffer from this condition may also experience fever, weight loss and extreme or constant fatigue. There are some cases where affected individuals may have developed a discoloration of the skin, particularly in the leg area, and may have developed sores as well. The cause of this syndrome is unknown, however it is more common in those who have suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for quite some time. Patients who are at risk for infection may have a lower white blood cell count than is necessary.

Medical marijuana can be an absolutely exceptional alternative treatment option for patients who suffer from a condition such as Felty's syndrome. Cannabis has many medicinal properties, most of which could alleviate the symptoms that are directly associated with this syndrome. Such properties of cannabis in relation to this syndrome are immunosuppressant properties, anti-inflammation properties to lessening the swelling of the joints, analgesic properties to alleviate pain in joints and serving as an appetite stimulant. Sativa strains are anti-fatigue and are great to keep a patient going throughout the day and an Indica strain is an anti-malaise product.
