Medical Marijuana and Back Sprain

What Is Back Sprain?

Improper lifting techniques and sudden movements lifting heavy objects you're not used to lifting can mess your back up royally. Throwing your back out such that you have to visit a chiropractor put it back into place is just so completely preventable, and yet so many people do it to themselves every day. What's more, back sprains aren't any fun either; jerking with the back muscles when lifting results in torn ligaments, tendons, and/or muscles. Ouch! Talk about pain you'd only wish on your worst enemy if he really deserved it! While back sprains can heal, they take time, just as any other part of the body would need if sprained. While it's best to follow a doctor's orders on how to care for a sprained back,it's not always best to take the medicine they prescribe to help with the pain. Then, too, you might have a doctor who prescribes nothing but ice, heat and/or rest.  Then it becomes a necessity to take something to ease the discomfort of the sprain while doing what you can to care for the kiddos and wait for extra help to come. Some doctors might tell you to just take an over the counter anti-inflammatory, while others might actually prescribe something a little more intense such as Vicodin or Oxycodone.  These prescribed NSAIDS, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can't be taken on an empty stomach for the nausea and other gastric problems they cause. Sometimes, too, they don't have the level of pain relief the patient needs. If the back sprain causes serious enough pain, the doctor might order a brace and possibly a spinal injection of pain medication, which seriously hurts in itself to receive.  Improper lifting techniques and sudden movements lifting heavy objects you're not used to lifting can mess your back up royally. Medical Marijuana and Back Sprain

Back Sprains and Medical Marijuana Use
Now, medical marijuana has the pain-relieving cannabinoids that would help that sprained back, and when the opportunity presents itself and junior takes a nap, you can too. Medical marijuana relieves enough pain and eases the patient in sleep that the body then can start healing appropriately. Obviously as a parent, you don't want to let junior see you inhale or have him around when you do take your dose of medical marijuana. That's not good parenting. (You probably also want a back up who will watch him if he wakes up and you're still resting.) However, gone are the days when inhaling is the only way to take medical marijuana. Since many patients choose not to smoke, this isn't a good idea to have them start.
Back Sprains and Medical Marijuana Treatments
For back sprain patients, probably the best means to take medical marijuana is through a topical solution. Marijuana dispensaries in the states where it has been legalized might have the ingredients on hand for you to mix your own. These are not to be ingested and no psychoactive effect will occur, leaving you free to parent junior and able to move about with less pain. Much like IcyHot or BenGay, the cannabis oil is mixed with aloe vera or beeswax balm for a thicker paste application. If you can reach the sprained area without assistance, you can apply this by rubbing it in and pulling a warm t-shirt over the top so it doesn't mess your clothes. Moving slowly and carefully about the house and not lifting anything for several days and resting when you can will speed the healing process. Get help if you can't reach the sprained area without pain, but by all means, don't ask junior to rub the medication on your back! Accidental ingestion on his part is still not good parenting.
If you're having trouble finding a dispensary or a medical marijuana doctor, either it isn't legal in your state yet or you can check with MarijuanaDoctors.com's locator. You can also call them directly with the toll-free number for a referral to help you on your way. Back sprains hurt, but traditional medicine can hurt worse!
