How To Renew A Marijuana Card

If the time has come for your medical marijuana renewal, you’re probably wondering what type of process you’ll need to go through. Here’s some information that will hopefully answer many of your questions.

Renewing a Medical Cannabis Card

Depending on the state in which you live, you might be able to go into your doctor’s office to renew your medical marijuana card. If you go back to the physician who provided your original medical marijuana recommendation, his or her office should already have all of your medical information. All you should need to bring will be your driver’s license or ID card to prove you still live in the state.

If you’re renewing and are seeing a new doctor, you’ll need to bring in your original card as well as your ID. You should also bring in any pertinent medical records in order to speed the process — although doing so is typically not required.

When You Get to the Doctor’s Office for Medical Marijuana Renewal

Once you get to the office, simply mention that you’re there to renew a medical cannabis card and show your ID (and records if you have them) to a staff member. If you’re going to a new doctor, be sure to bring either your original card or physician’s recommendation. You’ll probably need to fill out some paperwork, as well.

It’s very important to realize, however, that just because your card has expired doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be able to get a new one. The doctor will have to evaluate you to make sure you qualify. Your medical condition, for example, may have improved substantially. As a result, the doctor may no longer feel that you need medical marijuana as part of your treatment. Please don’t assume your renewal will be approved.

If it is approved, however, you will more than likely receive your new card in about 10 business days. After your card arrives, you’ll once again be able to obtain medical marijuana from your dispensary. The card will be active for 12 months, and you’ll need to renew it 30 days before the date of expiration.

If, however, you lose your card or it is stolen, you need to report it immediately to the appropriate agency (such as your state’s Department of Health Services). You’ll probably have to pay some sort of replacement fee.

The Benefits of Medical Marijuana Renewal

Not only are there well-documented benefits to using medical marijuana, but there are financial benefits as well. Marijuana has been shown to be an effective method for treating chronic pain associated with a wide range of medical conditions, whether it’s smoked, eaten or absorbed through topical oils. In addition, taxes are typically much lower for medicinal marijuana than for recreational weed in states that have approved its use.
